New York is by far the hardest hit state in the tuna sushi Salmonella outbreak traced to raw yellowfin tuna processed in India and imported, frozen, for distribution in many parts of the country.
The most recent raw tuna Salmonella update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates New York has 54 confirmed cases, 10 more than the CDC reported on May 1. The next closest state in terms of case counts is Massachusetts, with 33. New Jersey has had 28 case patients while Maryland and Illinois both have 27 confirmed illnesses in the outbreak.

Moon Marine has recalled 58,828 lbs of a frozen raw yellowfin tuna product, labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA. Nakaochi Scrape is tuna backmeat, which is specifically scraped off from the bones, and looks like a ground product.

Pet Food Company Linked To Salmonella Outbreak Has Food Safety Violations
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration found several food safety violations at the Diamond Pet Foods plant in Gaston, South Carolina, where products linked to a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 15 people in nine states were made.
At least five people have been hospitalized in the outbreak associated with a number of brands manufactured at the facility including: Natural Balance, Solid Gold, WellPet, Canidae, Apex and Diamond. The FDA inspected the plant on April 12 and inspectors filed a report which includes the following observations:
-No microbiological analysis is conducted or there is no assurance that animal fat used to make the food will not introduce pathogens.
-The sampling system is flawed.
-Lack of hand washing facilities at each location needed.
-Failure to properly maintain equipment which may lead to contamination problems.
-Equipment repaired with materials that cannot be cleaned such as duct tape and card board.

A Massachusetts Salmonella lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Boston seeks monetary damages against the purveyor of raw tuna scrape at the center of a national outbreak of Salmonella Bareilly — the biggest outbreak of foodborne illness so far this year.

Tuna Lawsuit Filed by National Salmonella Lawyers Representing Victims in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Other States

A tuna sushi Salmonella lawsuit has been filed by a Massachusetts woman who contracted a severe Salmonella Bareilly infection after eating a spicy tuna roll at a Cambridge restaurant.
A resident of Malden, in Middlesex County, the woman is a victim of a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 250 people in 24 states and the District of Columbia, including 27 Massachusetts residents. The outbreak has been linked to “Nakaochi Scrape,” a tuna product manufactured and sold by Moon Marine USA based in Cupertino, Calif.
The plaintiff, who is seeking damages in excess of $75,000, is being represented by the national food safety law firm Pritzker Olsen, which is representing other victims of the outbreak. The lawsuit was filed May 8 in the Boston Division of U.S. District Court, (case number 1:12-cv-10819-RGS).
On March 26, 2012, the woman dined at the Thelonious Monkfish restaurant in Cambridge, where she ate a spicy tuna roll that contained “Nakaochi Scrape” manufactured and sold by Moon Marine, according to the complaint. Two days later, she began to experience the symptoms of severe gastroenteritis including diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal cramping. These symptoms intensified over the next two days, and she then sought medical treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. She received treatment at the hospital where lab tests confirmed that she had a Salmonella Bareilly infection that was a genetic match to the outbreak strain. Since that time, repeated stool sample cultures from the victim have all tested positive for Salmonella and she has been legally unable to return to work.

NC Tempeh Salmonella Probe Focuses on Culture

Salmonella has been detected in the fungal spores starter culture used by Smiling Hara Tempeh, the food company at the center of a Salmonella Paratyphi B outbreak in Asheville, North Carolina. Meanwhile the number of cases in the outbreak has jumped to 60, from 46, and health investigators expect to see further expansion before the spread of the bacterial disease is over.
Smiling Hara Tempeh has recalled its full line of tempeh, an unpasteurized, cultured bean product used in vegan and vegetarian cooking as a meat substitute. It comes raw and should be cooked by consumers, but no one should use product that is currently in refrigerators. Previous tests confirmed that tempeh from the company was contaminated with the outbreak strain of Salmonella, which causes Paratyphoid Fever. Now tests are under way to see if the Salmonella recently found in the starter culture — purchased from a distributor that has not been named — matches the outbreak.
Buncombe County Health Director Alma “Gibbie” Harris said that it appears some of the people newly sick in the outbreak may have been infected at parties, with some getting ill from consumption and others falling ill from person-to-person contact with someone who is infected. Harris has stressed the importance of hand washing in getting the outbreak under control. Many of Smiling Hara’s customers were restaurants in western North Carolina, mostly Asheville.
The Food and Drug Administration has joined the investigation, which already has involved the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. Smiling Hara Tempe wants to resume production and is considering pasteurizing the product to lessen bacterial risk. The outbreak strain of Salmonella Paratyphi B has been virulent enough to send some to the hospital and is considered most dangerous to young children, older adults and others, such as cancer patients, who have weakened immune systems.

Salmonella Outbreak at Toast Cafe of Dilworth, NC

The Toast Cafe of Dilworth, North Carolina, near Charlotte, has been associated with an outbreak of Salmonella that the local health department believes could be related to hollandaise sauce or other egg dish. A total of 29 people who ate at Toast Cafe since late March have reported gastrointestinal illness including nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. Fifteen cases have been confirmed as outbreak infections.
